On September 11, I spent six hours touring and learning about the San Patrignano drug rehabilitation community located in Rimini, Itlay.
Addiction creates conflicts and San Patrignano deals with it restoratively and in a strength based manner. San Patrignano is a remarkably beautiful place that is completely free for all of its approximately hundred residents. It takes no government money for support. Darko is from Croatia and had developed a serious drug problem while living in South Africa where he also happen to become friends with Nelson Mandela who bought suits from the store where he worked. San Patrignano is in the country located on rolling hills of vineyards.
No fees are sought from any residents. There are 55 different areas of employment for residents including furniture building, frame making, web-design, wine making, cheese making, and animal care.
San Patrignano has a hospital that takes patients from all over the world that no one else wants. There is are lovely elementary and secondary schools, playgrounds and excellent athletic facilities for residents. San Patrignano is wonderful.
We want to construct a more humane, united, and free world: a goal that we concretely try to achieve, day after day, by living those values which we believe in. All of this towards a world full of life, a world without drugs. Frankly, I would love to live in a community like San Patrignano and there is no reason we cannot build similar communities all over the world! Lorrie Great post and thank you so much for sharing this information.
I believe that everything is connected and reading this right now is just that. I am currently a class where we are all discussing the philosophical aspects of the topics that we have chosen for our dissertation — and how they will all have positive social impacts.
One of my fellow students brought restorative justice up and I am going to share your blog with her. Great job — keep up the good work! This is a wonderful combination of harm reduction and restorative justice. Thanks so much for sharing. Hi Lorenn, Inspiring post! It seems persuasive support to the belief in holding people accountable for solutions not problems and doing it through respect and pay attention to accomplishments and contributions.
Thank you for sharing this expereince and your thoughts about it. Peter De Jong. Hi Lorenn I have been there twice now and both times I leave speechless — one thing that is impossible to get over on the blog is the enormity of the place — its vast!!
Why do we not have these places in every country when the need is so great?? Im so glad you got there. Keep spreading the SF- word, Kind regards, Klaus. What an inspiration. If it can happen there, there is hope for us over here. Thanks for sharing, great job and very encourage by what San Patrignano is doing, I wish we have this facilities for our people here in Singapore.
Keep up the good work and hopefully we in London can learn from the great work.Wishing all of our friends and supporters a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year.
The purpose of the workshop was for the parents to learn more about the admission process to help more UK residents to enter the community. They truly are a brilliant group of people, all supporting each other and any new parents from the UK as well whose children have entered San Pa Each year all of the parents, friends and supporters get together for a Summer BBQ and also a Christmas lunch.
We now also welcome back the UK residents who have been to the community and returned to the UK, well done to all of you, an achievement of a lifetime. We are here if you know of anyone who is interested in finding out more about the processes involved in entering the community. Take care everyone, all the best from everyone who is involved with the UK San Patrignano Association.
Our guide today was Michael who is just about to finish his programme at Botticella. Michael's addiction is gambling and now the community has a shorter programme based at Bottacella for this addiction.
So fascinating to speak with Michael, he believes that if he was exposed to drugs at a young age then he would have been addicted and he thinks that he is no different then his colleagues in the community. I have so much admiration for everyone here at San Patrignano who are now looking beyond drugs and helping those who are gambling addicts. Hello everyone, Danny here. I've been volunteering here in the community for the last couple of weeks and it has been an incredible experience.
I was one of the guides for the Wefree festival - this is the communities Drug Prevention program where school students from all over Italy visit San Patrignano.
The programme is run by the residents and they tell their stories to the students through workshops. The programme is hugely effective as it is peer to peer rather then auth This week I have also been volunteering as a guide for the International Forum. They have been working in some of the sectors and learning directly from the residents as they work. There are also lectures and presentations. Next week we have arranged for a workshop for some of the parents of the UK residents who we have helped to enter the community The parents are now keen to help more UK residents to enter the community which is such good news.
So refreshing to be here and to see the community thriving. Well done to everyone who works so hard to make this such a special and unique place. Your conviction and love changes lives every day Every year all of the friends and family of the UK residents who I have helped enter the community come together for a lunch and also to raise money to help others who are looking to go to Italy.
My heart swells with pride whenever I see someon I also love to see them reunited with their families and feel a sense of contentment from the parents that their children are safe again. San Patrignano is such a great story and one that we definitely need to hear more about every day. Sending my best to everyone who is involved with that special community in Italy.

We want to share in this report our concern on the ambiance that we discovered during our short stay in this famous Therapeutic Community presented as a reference model for the future, and point out the reflections that aroused in us, the questions that emerge regarding the vision of the future of humanity according to this prototype of tomorrow's society. This was the third Forum of its kind, the first two were organized in France and this was the first to be held in Italy.
It aims, they say, to place human being at the center of the economy and to consider as necessary to take into account the future generations in any economic decision. Innovative projects that seek to promote or are living examples of this idea were invited to participate in this conference, and given only 15 minutes to convince the audience. It was broadcast live on the Internet and later uploaded in YouTube.
Jacques Attali congratulated us at the end of the presentation and asked for our publications on the subject. Overall, Jacques Attali and people from the PlaNet Finance Group were enthusiastic about our presentation, whereas the representatives of San Patrignano Community were not in favor of our proposals that turned out to be in complete opposition to their preaching.
To such an extent that they requested for a debate between a doctor of San Patrignano and myself as representative of Takiwasi. I accepted, but it was later canceled due to lack of time genuine reason or concocted one?
That reaction was not surprising when one describes succinctly what San Patrignano is and how Rosa and I perceived this Community. San Patrignano has more than 25 years of existence and receives currently more than addicted residents at a time.
It is described as the largest therapeutic community for addicts in the world. It is an entire village with hospital, school, swimming pool, dentist's office, a huge dining room whose kitchen is the biggest in Italy with capacity to serve lunches at the same time etc. They made us visit all the 47 production workshops where residents work with the aim of making high-quality products fine wine, breeding of thoroughbred racehorses and Labrador Retrievers, hand-painted wallpaper, fine woodwork, toys, handicrafts, etc.
The philosophy of the Center is rehabilitation through excellence in work: there is no psychotherapy, there is neither spiritual orientation nor practice, there is no medication. All drugs, including tobacco, are confiscated at the gate. Residency is free. The printing house makes high-quality products and one of its colossal machines that works throughout the day has a market price of USdollars.
The patients live in huts and they are supervised in groups according to the place where they work. They get together for food in the huge dining room.
The cooks and the waiters are also patients and they wear uniforms. As news spread in the drug-using community that there was a safe haven where people could recover from addiction, others began to arrive at the property, where they lived in caravans. There are also two other smaller sister communities: in Bottichella residents in the hills above Rimini; and in Trento residents in the foothills of the Dolomites. Among the problems that affect the drug addict, drug use is the least relevant.
The core of the problem is not drugs, nor the abstinence crisis: it is the human being with his fears and the black holes that threaten to suck him in. That is why I do not like to say nor hear that ours is a community for drug addicts.
Ours is a community for living, where you can restart in life after years spent as a social outcast. Ours, if we really need a definition, is a community against social marginalisation. This is a radical departure from how the agencies and services in Scotland view themselves — as drug treatment and support agencies or rehabilitation centres.
The next radical departure is that everything in the community is of the highest quality: from the design and construction of the buildings, the food that is served to the residents, the products they make, and the services they provide. This commitment to quality is not incidental. It sets the standards and conditions to mitigate a lifetime of low expectations and social marginalisation.
It builds a foundation for high expectations for the present and the future. Another distinctive element of life in the community is that there is none of the usual group or individual drug treatment therapies. There are no professional drug treatment and support workers although psychological support is available to address underlying issues as and when appropriate.
They live, work, and eat alongside each other, providing peer support. Communication with the outside world is restricted to letter writing. There are no mobile phones or emails except for those engaging in distance learning education programmes, where email communication is required. Neither is there any money in the community — all of the daily needs are provided by the community; clothing packages from friends and family are permitted twice a year.
