These definition files cover the fuel system, spark advance, emmissions systems, engine idle control, diagnostics, and vehicle and transmission options. These can be downloaded by clicking the links that are located to the right. The PCMs supported cover the model year e. OS 's As of now, these files do not yet fully support the PCMs. The later calibration was revised to use a standard OS OSand many parameters have been moved to new locations within the binary.
It takes a lot of effort and tools to make this stuff happen. Your support will help keep this project going. Currently there are XDFs for the engine and diagnostics, but the transmission and electronic throttle still need work.
To make this happen, it takes tools like test benches, an oscilloscope, function generator, and other items that can be rather expensive. This will be tailored to the LT1 engine, especially the ''95; the VE table tuning aspects will be even more helpful to ''93 and ''97 LT1s. Second, you'll need the appropriate cable connector to go from your car to a computer. Of course, you'll also need a computer to run the program! However, it does not have definition file for OBDII cars ''02so you will only be able to tune ''95s. It's important to be sure that your vehicle and engine are mechanically sound before you begin tuning.
If any of these things are in poor repair, they can cause the PCM to think the engine is running one way when it is not. A good tune will never be achieved if something mechanical is in need of fixing or replacing. The PCM uses a table of cells to modify both spark timing and fueling. Where the different blocks begin and end can also be modified, with the stock tune having the vacuum blocks set at 30 32 for A4s50 and 80kPa, and the RPM blocks set at for A4sand Combining these, one can see how there will be 16 total blocks: below 30kpa, at RPM, and RPM; then the same for 30 to 50, from 50 to 80, and from 80 to kPa.
There is another modifier for both the engine load and speed boundaries called hysteresis. This affects how adjacent blocks of cells are combined when on the edge of a boundary say right at 30kPa at RPM. These grids are how the fueling is trimmed, depending on O2 sensor feedback seen in detail below under "BLMs"so how they are set can be important to getting a car running efficiently, whether you are running a MAF sensor or in speed density off the VE tables. When modifying the engine, especially with cams with more valve overlap, increased displacement, or ported heads, these will need to be adjusted accordingly.
The modded engine will tend to spend more time in different ranges than the stock engine. BLM stands for "block learn multiplier. But because the car is not running in an ideal world, there will be correction needed for differences in air temperature, density, humidity, as well as fuel octane, quality.
On top of those two big variables, there are also the changes that happen due to normal wear and tear on the engine and its sensors. By default, in closed loop, it attempts to get an air:fuel ratio AFR of General Motors produces several computer types and each is built for a specific engine group.
Some work with many engines, and some only work with one. It is very important to obtain the original computer, harness, and sensors when buying a used engine. This ensures that you have everything needed to make the swap as simple as possible.
The possibilities are almost endless. The reluctor wheel setup can be changed, but it requires the corresponding computer.
Gray sensors are 58x, and black sensors are 24x. There are two main types of computers: tooth and tooth reluctor wheel engines. The reluctor wheel is mounted to the crankshaft inside the block to the rear. The crank position sensor is mounted to the rear of the block, behind the starter.
As the crankshaft rotates, the teeth on the reluctor wheel interrupt the magnetic field created by the sensor. The sensor records these interruptions and sends a signal to the computer. These signals are used to detect issues, such as misfires and detonation, with the ignition system.
It is important to know which reluctor type you have, 24x or 58x. You can tell by looking at the reluctor wheel sensor: a black sensor is a 24x wheel, a gray sensor is for a 58x engine. The pin-outs and wiring harnesses are different. This is a Camaro ECM, front and back side. This is a 58x reluctor computer; the ancillary parts are very expensive, so make sure to get all of them from the donor car. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of money to buy these components individually.
Changing the reluctor wheel also requires changing the cam timing gear. The reluctor wheel and the cam gear work in tandem to monitor the ignition system. There are several different drive-bywire pedals. Not shown are pedals for the — Corvette, CTS-V, Trailblazer, and the rest of the trucks, which interchanged through the years.
The pedals and TAC modules are a matched set.
The Basics of LT1 Tuning
You need both units to properly operate a drive-by-wire throttle. These throttle bodies are: — Corvette top leftVortec trucks top rightdrive-by-wire assembly bottom leftand LS2 GTO bottom right.
Engines can be drive-by-cable or drive-by-wire, depending on the vehicle. The tooth reluctor wheel is found on drive-by-wire engines only. This reluctor wheel cannot be used with a drive-by-cable throttle body without modifications. If you want to run these engines with a traditional throttle cable, they need to be converted to a tooth reluctor wheel, along with a cam gear on the front of the engine and a tooth reluctor wheel computer.
Each engine uses a specific computer. If you do not have the proper computer, you can find a wide range of used LS computers from various retailers. The 24x ECMs can be programmed for either drive-by-cable or drive-by-wire. You can also convert an engine to drive-by-wire by reprogramming the original computer for drive-by-wire, but you must be able to plug the wiring harness into the particular computer.
The F-Body computers and harnesses are not compatible with up harnesses or computers because the plugs are different. Programming the stock ECM can be done several ways. Most of the aftermarket tuning modules and software are locked, meaning they lock themselves to a particular computer on the first use.
To unlock them, you must purchase pass codes or VINs for additional vehicles.Although Gen III PCMs are powerful control modules, they are of little use without tuning software tochange engine and transmission operating parameters.
You may find that the best results involve a blend of tuning services at an experienced dyno facility and final do-it-yourself tweaking using a popular scan-and-tune software package.
Prior to use in a production vehicle, each GM PCM is flashed with a calibration specific for its application. Vehicle options such as air conditioning, electric fans, transmission type, throttle type, etc.
GM repair technicians use a web-based subscription service to access on-board control module calibrations. When an on-board module is replaced during service, the technician uses TIS2Web for service programming.
Occasionally, a vehicle may receive a calibration update due to an undesirable performance behavior noted by owners of similar vehicles. Service technicians have access to the latest vehicle calibrations through an online subscription-based service.
LS SWAPS: Engine Management Systems Guide
This service is limited to flashing on-board modules with the latest GM calibrations. Gen III engine conversions always require calibration changes to a GM calibration, so this service is nothing more than a first step in preparing a PCM for an engine conversion. Unfortunately, service technicians having access to this GM service are often unwilling to use it for an enthusiast because it requires the vehicle to be present for a connection to the OBD-II DLC.
The Tech2 is the scan tool used by GM repair technicians to troubleshoot, diagnose, and reprogram on-board modules.
Because of its price, many owners choose an alternative tool for retrieving and clearing OBD-II codes. Photo Courtesy Keith McCord. Then the technician enters the vehicle identification number VINwhich provides a list of on-board modules available for programming. After choosing an on-board module for programming, the technician is prompted to select from among several available calibrations. The calibration data is temporarily downloaded to the local laptop or PC so that an interruption in Internet service does not interrupt programming and then the on-board module is programmed.
The Tech2 is a powerful handheld device used by GM service technicians for advanced vehicle diagnostics and programming. Note that the Mongoose cannot perform the advanced diagnostic procedures of the Tech2. Preparing a PCM for use with any engine conversion requires custom programming.
A new PCM does not contain a calibration ready for use and a PCM pulled from a used vehicle contains parameters preventing fuel delivery without satisfying vehicle antitheft system VATS requirements. Additional parameters must be changed for proper engine operation and appropriate diagnostic trouble code DTC processing and notification.
PCM calibration data tables and parameters are used to mathematically apply injector and spark timing. A misconception is that the calibration data follows engine hardware cubic inches, cylinder head specs, fuel injector size, and camshaft profile.
In reality, engine hardware influences table and parameter settings that must be adjusted by a tuner for an engine to run properly. Incorrect calibration settings result in an engine that runs poorly. Many owners choose to ship their PCM to a tuner who offers a mail-order calibration service. They typically fill out an order form with questions related to engine hardware cubic inches, cylinder head specs, fuel injector size, camshaft profile, etc and send it along with the PCM.The cries were heard from across the land:?
We want an article on tuning!? I must address some caveats before I delve into the meat of the article. I am not familiar with other software or other engine management systems. But rest assured, the general principles in the way the ECM operates are similar. So, no matter what you drive, if it's GM, you should be able to get something useful from this article. It is important to point out that tuning your own vehicle is a complex process, and if you are not comfortable with it you should seek out an expert to help you.

Open loop is used for startup running and the PCM will remain in open loop until a specific operating temperature is reached. Based on these factors plus air temperature, the PCM makes an educated guess about the correct amount of fuel needed for engine demands.
In open loop, the primary function of the PCM is to keep the engine operating despite the fact that temps are not optimal yet. The PCM must also keep emissions as low as possible, because startup is the time of greatest emissions production. As a side bar, this is why the Air Injection Reaction pump runs only for a few minutes upon startup. In Open Loop mode, the oxygen sensors we? Thus the term "open loop. Once an appropriate operating temperature is reached, the PCM then brings the O2 sensors on line and uses them for feedback about the fuel adjustments it is making.
The O2s complete the feedback loop, thus it is called Closed Loop operation. In Closed Loop, the PCM takes dozens of readings from the O2 sensors each second and uses that data to fine-tune the amount of open time the injectors are on.
In other words, it is the most complete burning i. The adjustments from the PCM are not just thrown away however. The adjustments are fed into a storage system that is used for future reference. Each "bank", or side of the engine has one oxygen sensor in OBDII there are two per side, on in front of the catalytic converter which is used for fuel adjustments, and one behind the converter, which is simply used to verify the cat is there and is working.
Each bank also, therefore, has its own STFT and LTFT values and the PCM can adjust injector pulse width simply the amount of time the injector is open each engine revolution independently on each side.
